Unprecedented Growth in University Sports Activities During FY 2025/2026

Minister of Higher Education Affirms:

University sports activities witnessed unprecedented development during the 2025/2026 fiscal year, reflected in increased participation and a broader range of sporting events across Egyptian universities and higher institutes. During the year, the 52nd and 53rd University and Higher Institutes Sports Tournaments were organized with the participation of 75–80 universities, featuring numerous team and individual competitions involving more than 10,000 students. In addition, more than 300,000 students participated in internal university sports activities to select university teams, while 21 centralized championships were organized as part of preparations for hosting the African University Games.

The "100 Days of Sports" Initiative was also launched as part of the Presidential Initiative "A New Beginning for Human Development." The initiative involved 41 universities, organized 512 sporting events, and benefited more than 103,000 students.

On the international level, the Egyptian Universities Sports Federation participated in the Summer World University Games in Germany, where Egypt's taekwondo team won the silver medal. Egyptian universities also achieved remarkable success at the 10th World University Championship in Spain. Misr International University won the gold medal in women's volleyball, while the American University in Cairo secured the gold medal in women's basketball. Egyptian student-athletes also earned several swimming medals, including Malak Mohamed (Misr International University), who won gold in the 50m Butterfly and silver in the 50m Freestyle; Layan Shady, who claimed silver in the 50m Breaststroke; and Ziad Abdel Azim, who earned bronze in the 50m Backstroke.

The "100 Days of Sports" Initiative also featured a variety of events across universities, including conferences and sports festivals attended by thousands of students. Highlights included the First University Students Conference at Suez Canal University, with the participation of 700 students; Tanta University Sports Festival, which attracted 3,500 students and featured an eSports league alongside sports performances; Aswan University Rowing and Kayaking Festival, attended by 1,000 students; sports festivals at Benha University (1,500 participants), Assiut University (2,000 participants), and Minya University (3,000 participants). The First University Sports Leaders Conference was also held, bringing together representatives from 37 universities and 60 sports leaders to discuss the future development of university sports.

The Egyptian Universities Sports Federation also signed cooperation protocols with several universities to implement activities under the "100 Days of Sports" Initiative and revive the Sector League, which had been suspended for ten years. Another protocol was signed to organize the 2026 FISU World University Finswimming Championship in Sharm El-Sheikh. The Federation also intensified preparations for hosting the African University Games in Cairo, launched a competition to develop the visual identity of university sports, and opened volunteer registration for university students to assist in organizing both the University and Higher Institutes League and the 2026 African University Games.

In addition, the Federation launched the "Universities Sports Federation Ambassadors" Program to promote university sports, including a workshop for candidates representing Egypt in the International Ambassadors Program. It also organized the African Day for Egyptian Universities, bringing together participants from seven African countries, Canadian universities, and the Egyptian e-Learning National University, with more than 300 students taking part. Egypt was also represented in Switzerland to discuss preparations for the 2026 World University Finswimming Championship, while Federation representatives participated in the International Sports Event Management Training Program held in China in June 2025.

Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, emphasized that university sports experienced unprecedented progress during the 2025/2026 fiscal year, thanks to the support of the political leadership. This progress has expanded participation, diversified sporting activities, and strengthened the international presence of Egyptian universities. He stressed that university sports are a fundamental tool for identifying talented students, developing their abilities, and promoting positive values, while reaffirming universities' responsibility to nurture gifted student-athletes and support their participation in various competitions.

The Minister also noted that significant progress has been made in the organizational and technical preparations for hosting the 12th African University Games (Cairo 2026). The sports program, featuring 18 disciplines, has been officially approved, while the event's visual identity and official mascot have been launched. A comprehensive plan has also been developed to distribute competitions across five sports zones within Greater Cairo, alongside the establishment of an integrated athletes' village capable of accommodating more than 1,200 participants. Furthermore, a large-scale operational simulation was successfully conducted through the Egyptian Universities Championship, involving more than 4,000 students from 73 universities, to assess venue readiness and operational efficiency. Logistical, medical, and digital preparations are also being finalized to ensure Egypt hosts the event according to the highest international standards.

Dr. Ahmed Kamel, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Universities Sports Federation, stated that the 2025/2026 fiscal year featured a comprehensive package of university sports programs aimed at expanding participation and discovering athletic talent. Among the most notable achievements was the launch of Egypt's first University eSports League, implemented across nine universities with the participation of 3,250 students. The Federation also organized specialized recreational and training programs, in addition to the First Regional League, which covered Egypt's seven geographical regions and attracted 15,000 students. A summer sports camp for outstanding student-athletes was also organized at Tanta University Camp in Baltim, with participation from 24 Egyptian universities, reflecting the continuous advancement of university sports across the country.

Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, Media Advisor and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry, stated that the 2025/2026 fiscal year witnessed Egypt winning the bid to host the FISU World University Finswimming Championship in Sharm El-Sheikh next October, in addition to securing the hosting rights for the African University Games in Cairo next September. He reaffirmed the Ministry's continued commitment to supporting university sports and preparing athletes capable of representing Egypt with distinction at international competitions.
