Higher education in Sinai: sustainable development and investment in the future
On the occasion of the 44th anniversary of Sinai Liberation Day, and within the framework of Egypt’s efforts to accelerate comprehensive development—particularly in the Sinai Peninsula and Canal cities—the higher education and scientific research sector is receiving significant support from the political leadership, contributing to the development of this strategic region.
Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, affirmed that the state places great importance on developing Sinai and the Canal cities, backed by unprecedented support from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. He noted that numerous major national and development projects in higher education are being implemented, with total investments reaching approximately EGP 25.6 billion, in addition to ongoing work to establish new faculties and modernize laboratories and training workshops.
The Minister explained that Egypt’s higher education system has witnessed remarkable expansion in recent years, through the establishment of new universities, the hosting of international university branches, and the offering of joint academic programs granting dual degrees. This reflects the diversity of educational models among public, private, national, technological, and international universities and institutes. He emphasized that this diversity aims to meet the evolving requirements of the global labor market while strengthening academic and research cooperation among institutions, opening broader prospects for scientific partnerships and contributing to the preparation of qualified human resources.
Dr. Nasser Mandour, Acting President of New Ismailia National University, stated that the university is one of the most prominent national projects in the East Canal region, with a total cost of approximately EGP 4.5 billion. Located in New Ismailia City, the university has witnessed growing student enrollment, reflecting the high level of confidence in the institution and the satisfaction of students and parents with the quality of educational services and the advanced academic environment it provides.
Dr. Ashraf Heneigel, President of Suez University, confirmed the continuation of construction work at the university’s branch in Abu Redis, South Sinai, which will become the first branch of a public university in South Sinai, along with the establishment of a national university affiliated with the parent university. The total cost is expected to reach EGP 3.5 billion. The first phase includes four faculties: Science, Education, Commerce, and Arts. Concrete structural works have been completed, and finishing works are underway. He emphasized the importance of the branch in supporting development efforts in South Sinai Governorate.
Dr. Ayman El-Shibiny, President of Arish University, noted that the university has implemented a number of educational and development projects with total funding of approximately EGP 1.7 billion. He added that the university attaches great importance to strengthening academic and research cooperation through numerous local and international partnership agreements, contributing to the exchange of expertise, improving educational efficiency, and enhancing quality. He also stated that the university has developed strategic directions based on linking education to development and the knowledge economy through four main pillars: education aligned with labor market needs, research that serves the economy and addresses societal challenges, comprehensive digital transformation, and transitioning into a productive and innovative university.
For his part, Dr. Ashraf Hussein, President of King Salman International University, stated that the total cost of establishing the university has reached approximately EGP 10.5 billion. Its three branches in El-Tor, Ras Sedr, and Sharm El-Sheikh support educational development in the region. He added that the university has advanced infrastructure and distinguished human capabilities that support the educational process, and that it offers academic programs leading to dual degrees in cooperation with prestigious international universities.
Dr. Atef Eddin, President of East Port Said National University, explained that the university is one of the fourth-generation universities, established at a cost of approximately EGP 4.6 billion. He affirmed that the university seeks to provide an educational environment that fosters creativity and innovation, encourages student participation in various activities, and focuses on practical training to develop skills and prepare graduates for the labor market.
Dr. Heba Abdel Aty, Acting President of East Port Said Technological University, stated that the university is one of the modern educational institutions supporting the industrial development path, with a total cost of EGP 808 million. She noted that the university aims to offer educational programs that prepare qualified technical professionals capable of meeting labor market needs, adding that the university is preparing to graduate its first cohort by the end of the current academic year—marking the beginning of achieving its educational and developmental goals.
Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, Media Advisor and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry, stated that the interest in establishing and developing universities in the Sinai Peninsula and Canal cities comes within the framework of the state’s comprehensive vision for developing this strategic region and strengthening its role in the higher education system.
He added that these efforts have resulted in the establishment of several universities, including Arish University, King Salman International University, New Ismailia National University, East Port Said National University, and East Port Said Technological University, in addition to ongoing work to complete the Suez University branch in Abu Redis, which will be the first public university branch in South Sinai, as well as a national university affiliated with it.
The spokesperson emphasized that these universities contribute to encouraging Sinai and Canal cities residents to pursue university education, spreading cultural awareness among youth, supporting comprehensive regional development efforts, responding to the growing demand for higher education, and providing distinguished educational opportunities.
