Nearly 3 Million Healthcare Services, 97,400 Surgical Procedures, and 1.25 Million Outpatient and Emergency Visits
Four Hospitals Accredited by GAHAR and the Largest Development Plan Worth More Than EGP 2.35 Billion in Preparation for Joining Egypt's Universal Health Insurance System
As part of the vision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, led by Dr. Abdel Aziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Acting Minister of Culture, to advance university hospitals and enhance the quality of healthcare services provided to citizens, Minia University has announced the achievements of its university hospitals during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The results reflect a major leap forward in infrastructure development, the expansion of medical, therapeutic, and diagnostic services, and the enhancement of healthcare system efficiency, further strengthening the role of university hospitals in serving the community.
Dr. Essam Farahat, President of Minia University, emphasized that the achievements realized during the 2025/2026 fiscal year reflect the state's strong commitment to developing university hospitals as a cornerstone of Egypt's healthcare system. He noted that the University has placed the modernization of its hospitals at the forefront of its priorities through continuous investment in medical infrastructure, the development of human resources, and the implementation of the highest standards of quality and accreditation. These efforts ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality healthcare services while reinforcing the hospitals' role in medical education, scientific research, and community service.
He added that Minia University Hospitals have undergone the largest expansion plan in their history. Over the past four years, bed capacity has nearly doubled from 1,067 beds in 2021 to approximately 2,000 beds at present. Capacity is expected to increase to around 2,500 beds with the inauguration of four new university hospitals: the Oncology Hospital, the Internal Medicine and Specialized Surgery Hospital, the Ophthalmology Hospital, and the Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry Hospital. This expansion further strengthens the University's position as one of the largest university medical complexes in Upper Egypt.
The University President explained that Minia University Hospitals currently comprise 10 university hospitals with nearly 2,000 beds, including 437 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, more than 50 operating rooms, and over 80 neonatal incubators. An additional 500 beds are expected to be added in the coming months, significantly increasing capacity to meet the growing healthcare needs of citizens.
During the fiscal year, the hospitals delivered nearly 3 million medical, therapeutic, and diagnostic services, while the emergency departments and outpatient clinics received approximately 1.25 million patient visits, reflecting the public's confidence in the quality of healthcare services provided by the university hospitals.
Dr. Ayman Hosnein, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development and Executive Director of the University Hospitals, stated that the hospitals performed 97,438 surgical procedures across various specialties, including 7,704 advanced and highly specialized surgeries carried out under the Presidential Initiative to Eliminate Surgical Waiting Lists. In addition, nearly 8,600 endoscopic procedures and more than 4,100 cardiac catheterization procedures were performed, demonstrating the remarkable advancement of specialized medical services.
He added that the dialysis units provided more than 65,000 dialysis sessions, in addition to over 4,000 pediatric dialysis sessions. The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department also recorded 10,041 deliveries, while continuing to implement the latest evidence-based protocols supporting natural childbirth.
Dr. Ehab Refaat, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, confirmed that the diagnostic services achieved outstanding performance, with more than 1.8 million laboratory tests conducted, over 55,000 units of blood and blood products dispensed, and more than 450,000 radiological examinations performed across various imaging modalities. In addition, approximately 25,000 radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions were provided for cancer patients, reflecting the comprehensive integration of diagnostic and therapeutic services across the university hospitals.
He also highlighted a significant milestone achieved during the year, with four university hospitals receiving accreditation from the General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation (GAHAR): the Liver and Gastroenterology Hospital, the Ophthalmology Hospital, the Kidney and Urology Hospital, and the Internal Medicine and Surgery Hospital. Registration procedures are currently underway for two additional hospitals. Furthermore, the University signed an agreement with the Universal Health Insurance Authority to provide healthcare services through more than 800 beds across the accredited hospitals.
The University President further noted that the hospitals also obtained a liver transplantation license and established a specialized clinic for pre-transplant evaluation and post-transplant follow-up. Preparations are currently underway to perform the University's first liver transplant, marking a major milestone in the delivery of advanced medical services to the residents of Minia Governorate and Upper Egypt.
He added that the University is implementing one of the largest development plans in the history of its hospitals. Six university hospitals are currently undergoing renovation and modernization at a cost exceeding EGP 1.5 billion, alongside the acquisition of advanced medical and non-medical equipment valued at more than EGP 850 million, bringing the total investment to over EGP 2.35 billion. These investments are expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency and improve the quality of healthcare services.
The university hospitals also continued to fulfill their community service mission by organizing 25 comprehensive medical convoys across the various districts of Minia Governorate and participating in 10 presidential and national initiatives. In addition, the hospitals received approximately EGP 29 million in support from civil society organizations, further strengthening their capacity to provide comprehensive healthcare services to citizens.
The achievements of the 2025/2026 fiscal year reaffirm Minia University Hospitals' continued success in fulfilling their therapeutic, educational, and research mission while strengthening their contribution to Egypt's healthcare system. Through the provision of integrated healthcare services that meet the highest standards of quality, the hospitals continue to advance the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research's vision for the development of university hospitals and reinforce their position as one of the largest medical and academic institutions in Upper Egypt.
