Minister of Higher Education and Alexandria Governor Attend the Launch of “Alexandria... Birth of a Global City” Celebrations in a Distinguished Festive Atmosphere

Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Eng. Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria, and Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, attended the launch of the celebrations marking the founding anniversary of the city of Alexandria under the slogan “Alexandria... Birth of a Global City.”

The event was organized in cooperation with the Greek Embassy, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Alexandria Archaeological Society, the Consulate General of Greece in Alexandria, the Hellenic Research Institute for Alexandrian Civilization, and the Greek Community in Alexandria, amid a festive atmosphere reflecting the city's rich heritage and distinguished cultural standing.

The event was attended by Dr. Amira Yassin, Deputy Governor of Alexandria; Ambassador Nikolaos Papageorgiou, Ambassador of Greece to Cairo; Mr. Ioannis Peryakis, Consul General of Greece in Alexandria; Dr. Mona Haggag, President of the Alexandria Archaeological Society; Ms. Calliope Limneos Papakosta, Director of the Hellenic Research Institute for Alexandrian Civilization; in addition to a number of ambassadors, consuls, members of the House of Representatives and Senate, religious, security, and executive leaders in the governorate, representatives of relevant entities, as well as broad Egyptian and Greek participation.

The celebratory parade began in front of the Greco-Roman Museum on Fouad Street, passing by the statue of Alexander the Great at Sa’at Al-Zohour Square, and concluding at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The parade featured Egyptian and Greek children and youth dressed in traditional costumes carrying the Alexandria flag, in a symbolic expression of the city’s early inhabitants and how Alexandria brought them together in harmony despite cultural differences. The event also included a variety of artistic performances and cultural displays that highlighted the city’s historical and cultural identity.

The celebrations also featured military music performances, a ceremonial horse guard, and Egyptian and Greek folkloric performances at the Plaza of Civilizations at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in addition to musical and heritage performances that created a unique festive atmosphere reflecting the city’s history through the ages.

Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa expressed his pride in participating in Alexandria’s founding anniversary celebrations, emphasizing that this reflects the city’s historical, cultural, and scientific significance, as it has remained a leading center for thought and knowledge throughout the ages.

He pointed out that Alexandria possesses advanced scientific and research infrastructure that strengthens its pivotal role in supporting higher education, scientific research, and innovation, noting that the diversity of its academic and research institutions grants it significant competitiveness at both regional and international levels.

For his part, the Governor of Alexandria stressed that these celebrations reaffirm the city’s historical and cultural significance and reflect the governorate’s commitment to preserving its rich heritage and presenting it to future generations. He noted that Alexandria will always remain a symbol of cultural diversity and human coexistence, as well as a unique cultural and tourist destination.

He added that celebrating the city’s founding day is not merely a historical occasion but also a message affirming pride in Alexandria’s identity and long-standing history, along with the commitment to continuing comprehensive development efforts to strengthen its position as one of the world’s most important coastal and cultural cities.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, expressed the library’s pride in participating in organizing this celebration, which aims to highlight Alexandria’s rich history and showcase its cultural, scientific, and artistic heritage.

He affirmed that organizing this event stems from the library’s commitment to preserving human heritage and promoting the values of dialogue and tolerance upon which the city of Alexandria and its great library were founded.

The parade concluded amid great interaction from attendees in a scene that embodied Alexandria’s spirit and diverse identity, reaffirming the depth of its historical and cultural ties with different peoples, ensuring that the city remains a living model of civilizational interaction throughout the ages.

The celebrations are set to continue throughout the day, with the program featuring a variety of cultural and artistic events.
